Ways to improve frameworks for dam safety management, the importance of international exchanges of experience, and the value of risk-informed decisionmaking were among the key themes at the first International Conference on Dam Safety Management and Engineering, organized by the Malaysian National Committee on Large Dams (MYCOLD). The conference took place in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia, from 19 to 21 November, with the theme 'Resilient dams for safe communities'. Prof Datin Lariyah Mohd Sidek, who chairs MYCOLD, welcomed more than 400 international participants from 15 nations to the meeting, and outlined the scope of the conference. She drew attention to her Committee's work on capacity building, as well as the strong collaboration with ICOLD, and with the Canadian Dam Association. CDA organized a number of workshops before and after the conference, on flood evaluation, dam safety reviews, emergency management and risk-informed decision-making.
