Developing large offshore vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) rotor technology, from concept to laboratory-scale prototype, is now underway at the US Sandria National Laboratories. There are four major research elements to the work: 1. innovative aero-elastic rotor conceptual design; 2. deep-water system design and cost analysis; 3. rotor material and manufacturing strategies; and, 4. subscale rotor prototype design and testing.
