The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, attended a ground-breaking ceremony on 11 January for the 36 MW Ordubad hydro project in the autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan. The diversion-type plant, which will be equipped with three 12 MW units, is being built on the river Araz, in cooperation with Iran. It will comprise a diversion canal with a length of 12.74 km, and a dam, impounding a reservoir with a storage capacity of 1.5 × 10~6 m~3. The President laid a foundation stone for the new plant during a working visit to Nakhchivan, which borders Armenia, Iran and Turkey. During the visit he also participated in a ceremony for the commissioning of water supply and sewerage systems for Julfa and its surrounding settlements. Iran and Azerbaijan finalized an agreement last October to cooperate on the construction and operation of the Ordubad project and the Marazad scheme across the border in Iran. Both projects will be on the river Araz.
