EDF has commissioned the 97 MW Romanche-Gavet hydropower plant in the southeastern department of Isere, France. The run-of-river project, which took ten years to build at a total cost of €400 million (US$ 470 million), was inaugurated on 9 October by Jean-Bernard Levy, EDF Group Chairman and CEO, at an event attended by Joel Giraud, State Secretary in charge of rural development, as well as representatives and delegates from local and regional public authorities.The project, which entailed the construction of a new dam at Livet-et-Gavet, and an underground powerhouse in the Belledonne mountain range in the Dauphine Alps, replaces a cascade of six plants and five dams that were built on the Romanche river at the start of the last century. Average annual output from the new plant, on the same stretch of the river, will increase by 40 per cent to 560 GWh. The size and significance of the project is underlined by the fact that its design output will be approximately equivalent to the annual residential consumption of the regional cities of Grenoble and Chambery, which have a combined population of about 230 000 inhabitants. In comparison, the six former plants, with an aggregate installed capacity of 82 MW, typically generated annual output of around 400 GWh.
