China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) has signed an EPC contract worth CNY 11.52 billion (US$ 1.62 billion) for the 1.2 GW Data Dian hydro plant in the Indonesian province of North Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. The Chinese state-owned construction group, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group, announced on 28 May that it is to design and build the plant, an RCC dam, flood discharge structures and a water intake and diversion tun- nels on the middle and upper reaches of the river Kayan, on behalf of the owner-operator Indonesia Dafeng Heshun Energy Industri. The project is expected to be fully commissioned within five years, according to the terms of the contract. The project, which is expected to generate 7770 GWh/year, is designed to provide power for planned industrial parks, with advanced metal smelting as the leading industry, in such areas as Tanjung Selor. Indonesia is aiming to transform its North Kalimantan province into the country's energy and mining hub, with the support of China through its Belt and Road Initiative. President Xi Jinping agreed to provide financing through the Belt and Road Initiative for the development of major infrastructure projects in Indonesia during bilateral talks which took place with Indonesia's President Joko Widodo during the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, in July 2019.
