Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the power utility serving Canada's east-central province, is planning an extensive 20-year overhaul of its hydropower fleet. The estimated C$2.5 billion turbine/generator overhaul programme will entail the repair or replacement of key components in generating units at OPG's hydro facilities, the utility announced on 19 April. The investments will ensure the plants can continue to operate efficiently and reliably while supporting OPG's net-zero carbon goals under its recent Climate Change Plan. The programme will also create new jobs and numerous economic benefits for local and indigenous communities in the way of partnerships, apprenticeships and additional work opportunities. "As a company, we have made a commitment to reach a net-zero carbon footprint by 2040 and investing in our hydro assets is key to reaching our climate change goals," said Alison Bradley, Director of Asset and Project Management.
