Long-distance transmission for large hydro: The 2 GW Ethiopia-Kenya interconnector

Almost half the population of Africa currently lives without access to electricity. To harness the available potential for economic development, and improve the future life opportunities for more sections of society, even greater efforts will be required in electrification. This is especially true considering the forecast rates of population growth. In addition to the expansion of classical energy infrastructure in the form of centralized large power stations and hierarchical grid structures, a range of options are now available for increasing the rate of electrification. For the efficient transportation of electricity over long distances, transmission using HVDC is particularly suitable. Several gigawatts of electrical power can be transmitted with ± 800 kV (or in some cases even ±1100 kV) of voltage over several thousand kilometres, with low losses. National grids with different voltages, frequencies or operational management regimes can be interconnected and stabilized. A milestone project in this field within the framework of the development of East African infrastructure has been described in this article.
