A feasibility study for the Magwagwa multipurpose dam development project (MMDP) incorporating hydropower, water supply, catchment management and irrigation, was undertaken by SMEC in 2011. [SMEC, 2011]. The project is. In Nyamira County, Nyanza Province, in the southeast of Kenya. It will incorporate a 95 m-high, 450 m long CFRD, and the power-plant will have a capacity of 120 MW, with an expected annual production of 510 GWh/year. It will also supply water to 19 service centres, including Magwagwa town, and water for irrigation and fisheries. It was expected that the electricity generated from the plant would to be sold to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). The initial cost for the project was approximately KES 90 billion (approximately US$ 837.6 million).
