Simon Morrish, CEO of Xlinks, UK, spoke on a recently released Norton Rose Fulbright podcast about the planned Xlinks solar project which could transfer solar energy from Morocco via four subsea cables to the UK, totalling 3.6 GW. Xlinks isaiming to address the key challenges associated with the transition to a low carbon economy: securing low-cost power, from sustainable sources while maintaining a reliable electricity network. Morrish commented that the price of solar and wind has decreased exponentially over the past decade and, as part of his vision, the Xlinks project could deliver 7.5 per cent of total UK electricity demand. Around 1500 km~2 of land has already been secured in Morocco for the scheme, he continued, and two potential UK grid connection locations have already been established in Sothern England and South Wales.
