ABB has been awarded a contract by the Canadian utility BC Hydro to supply power transformers with 'advanced safety features and a smaller footprint' for the 2805 MW Mica hydro plant in British Columbia. Under the C$ 28 million con- tract, which was disclosed by ABB on 14 December, the company will design, manufacture and supply single phase, 176 MVA, 500 kV transformers, which are to be manufactured at ABB's transformer facility in Varennes, Quebec. The contract is part of BC Hydro's effort to upgrade some of the ultra-high-voltage equipment in the Mica underground powerhouse, which is nearing the end of its useful life. The new transformers will replace the plant's generator step-up (GSU) transformer banks to mitigate the risk of tank rupture, according to ABB.
