Construction of a greenfield hydro-power project near Juneau, the capital city of the US state of Alaska, could begin this summer following approval of a land use permit in late November by the United States Forest Service (USFS). Juneau Hydropower Incorporated (JHI), the local project developer, announced on 6 December that the issuance of the Special Use Permit by the USFS was the final major regulatory hurdle prior to beginning construction on the 19.8 MW Sweetheart Lake plant. This follows the award in September 2016 by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) of a 50-year licence to the developer to construct and operate the facility, which will be located on Sweetheart Creek in the Tongass National Forest, about 48 km south of Juneau, on federal land administered by the USFS.
