Chinese investors agreed in March to develop and finance two private hydropower projects in Nepal on an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Financing (EPCF) basis. Dongfang Electric International Corporation (DEC International), based in Sichuan, signed an MoU on 28 March to design, build and finance the 75 MW Trishuli Galchhi project, on the river Trishuli, a major tributary of the Sapta Gandaki, on the border between Nuwakot and Dhading districts of the Central Development Region, with Siddha-kali Power Ltd (SPL), the private developer of the project. Under the terms of the MoU, DEC International will finance US$ 94 million of the total estimated US$ 150 million cost, with SPL to repay the Chinese company from the loans it had secured from Nepali banks within a year of commercial operation. Both sides agreed to sign a formal agreement before the end of April. The construction of the project is expected to begin this September, and to be completed within 42 months.
