A technology using a process known as torrefaction, which concentrates biomass, making it transportable and increasing its shelf life, may encourage Indian small holders to exploit it for energy generation, rather than burning it in the open air*. Although the technology has been used on an industrial scale for more than a century, it remains inaccessible to farmers in remote regions. Research workers at the MIT Tata Centre for Technology and Design are looking at ways of simplifying the process, making it more profitable to process the biomass, even on a very small scale, in local centres, rather than burning it in the open air.
