African carbon finance group, Aera Group, announced in January that it is collaborating with the Virunga National Park, to launch a VCS carbon certification process for the Matebe hydropower plant in the eastern region of DRC. The 13.8 MW run-of-river plant, in the town of Matebe in North Kivu province, was inaugurated in December 2015 (see H&D Issue 1, 2016). Matebe will save an estimated 50 000 tonnes of CO_2 emissions per year.
