Switzerland's pumped-storage capacity was further increased at the beginning of this year with the entry into full operation of the expanded FMHL facility in the southwestern canton of Vaud. The project, known as FMHL+, has resulted in the doubling of the capacity at the existing Veytaux pumped-storage station from 240 to 480 MW, of which 60 MW will act as a reserve. The CHF 331 million (US$ 328 million) project, which involved the addition of two 120 MW units in a new underground plant, will also result in a near doubling of its annual production capacity to 1 TWh. The first unit was commissioned in December 2016, and the second in January this year. The new plant, which took more than 10 years to complete from first planning, is expected to play a key role in supplying electricity to western Switzerland, and meeting increasing demand for balancing energy.
