Clean Energy Group Georgia LLC has been awarded the rights to develop, build, own and operate the 433 MW Namakhvani hydropower cascade project on the river Rioni, in the northwest region of Imereti, Georgia. Clean Energy Group, the Norwegian renewable energy developer, owner and long-term asset operator, announced on 18 January that its local subsidiary would build, own and operate the two-plant project, in consortium with Turkey's construction group ENKA Insaat ve Sanayi. In addition to being a joint venture partner, ENKA will also act as the main contractor. The project will involve the construction of the 333 MW Namakhvani and 100 MW Tvishi plants, with a combined average annual output of 1514 GWh, at a total estimated cost of around US$ 730 million. The project, which is to be located in the municipalities of Tskaltubo and Tsageri, near the city of Kutaisi, between the existing Lajanuri and Gumati hydro plants, is currently scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2021.
