The authors outline the important multiple roles of the Orlik dam on the Vltava river, and the recently identified need to enhance its safety by upgrading the flood discharge works. The options considered are summarized, and the reasons for selecting the design of the upgrade project which was eventually adopted. Preparations are now underway, and construction could begin in 2019.
