Australia has an area of 7 680 000 km~2, and a population of about 24.22 million (September 2016 estimate). Water resources The National Water Commission addresses water-related issues and provides funding under the National Water Initiative (NWI) programme for projects to improve water efficiency and the delivery of services. Additional funding is also available through the National Environmental Programme (NEP) for projects that will address environmental issues, including those in the water industry. There are 572 large dams in operation, including 384 earth or rockfill dams, 138 concrete dams and 34 composite dams. The total storage of all dams is 94.9 km~3.
