The second turbine bound for EDF's Paimpol-Brehat tidal array has been successfully deployed by Open-Hydro. When the turbines come on line, the project will be the world's first grid-connected tidal array (see H&D Issue Six, 2014). The 16 m-diameter turbine will operate at a depth of 40 m below the surface, close to the first machine, which was deployed in January. In the coming weeks, the array will be connected to a subsurface converter, developed by GE Renewables. A single cable will deliver 1 MW of energy to the onshore station for connection to the French grid. On a technical and industrial level, the delivery will prepare the way for the Normandie Hydro project, a 14 MW array to be installed in 2018.
