More than 1200 participants assembled in Johannesburg, South Africa, in May, for ICOLD's 84th Annual Meeting. The week began with meetings of the ICOLD Board, the Technical Committees, the Regional Clubs and the Young Engineers' Forum. The first of the Technical Excursions also took place, and the Exhibition was officially opened on 16 May. A highlight of the week was the one-day Symposium on 18 May. After Welcome Messages from the Chairman of SANCOLD, Danie Badenhurst, ICOLD President Prof Anton Schleiss, and Secretary-General Michel de Vivo, there was a keynote opening address from South Africa's Minister of Water and Sanitation, H.E. Nomvula Mokon-yane, and messages from China's Vice Minister of Water Resouces, H.E. Liu Ning and Morocco's Minister of Water, Ms Charafat Afailal.
