India's state-controlled hydropower producer NHPC has contracted Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to carry out the modernization of the 180 MW Baira Siul run-of-river plant in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. The scope of the contract, worth IR 1327.4 million (US$ 19.87 million), includes electromechanical works comprising the supply, installation and commissioning of turbines and accessories and dismantling of the existing equipment, NHPC announced on 12 September. The plant's three existing 66 MW units were supplied and installed by BHEL in 1980 and 1981. The Baira Siul plant on the Baira, Siul and Bhaledh tributaries of the river Ravi, was the first hydropower station to be built by NHPC, formerly the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, and is the first to be modernized with the aim of extending its operating life. BHEL had previously renovated machinery damaged by excessive silt in 1999. NHPC owns and operates 21 hydro stations with total capacity of 6667 MW, including two hydropower stations totalling 1520 MW, in a joint venture with the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The most recent addition to its growing generation fleet is the 160 MW Teesta Low Dam Stage Ⅳ hydropower project, in the northeastern state of West Bengal. The run-of-river plant, which was also equipped by BHEL, was fully commissioned in August of this year (see separate story in this issue). In addition to the 800 MW Parbati Ⅱ and the 330 MW Kishenganga projects, NHPC is at present constructing the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri project in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
