A major milestone has been reached in the ongoing development of the 1000 MW Limmern pumped-storage plant in east-central Switzerland, with the inauguration on 9 September of the Muttsee dam. Located on the Muttenalp, at about 2500 m above sea level, it is the highest elevation dam in Europe, and also the longest in Switzerland, with a crest length of 1054 m. The construction of the new dam has nearly tripled the storage capacity of Lake Mutt, which will act as the upper reservoir for the future pumped-storage project, to 23 × 10~6 m~3 from 8 × 10~6 m~3.
