Whitman River Dam Inc, the owner and operator of the Crocker Pond hydro scheme in Westminster, Massachusetts, USA, has placed an order with Mavel Americas Inc for a horizontal Kaplan 'S' turbine and related equipment. The unit at Crocker Pond will operate under a head of 11.7 m, with a flow of 1.7 m~3/s. The machine will be manufactured at Mavel's plant in the Czech Republic. The type of unit has been chosen for the scheme as a result of its high efficiency over a wide range of head and flow conditions. The turbine is double regulated with a horizontal shaft, and will be connected to the generator by a flexible coupling. The capacity will be 145 kW at best efficiency. As well as the Kaplan unit, Mavel is to supply a hydraulic power unit, the horizontal synchronous generator, electrical controls and switchgear.
