India's Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) announced in early October that it had secured contracts worth around Rp 4300 million (about US$ 64.6 million) to rehabilitate and modernize two hydro plants. The company will carry out the design, engi- neering, manufacture, supply, dismantling, erection, testing and commissioning of critical parts of the turbines, generators, governors, control and instrumentation systems, protection, and balance of plant for six 60 MW units at the Balimela station of Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) and the three 60 MW units of the Baira Siul facility of National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). The units at Balimela and Baira Siul have been in operation for more than 35 years and their renovation and modernization will result in the restoration of capacity, improvement in efficiency and reduction in auxiliary power consumption, in addition to leading to better plant availability, BHEL announced in October. Major equipment will be manufactured by BHEL's plants at Bhopal, Jhansi and Bengaluru.
