BC Hydro has received the approval of the Government of British Columbia to proceed with the construction of the 1100 MW Site C storage hydropower project. Construction of the project, on the Peace river in northeastern British Columbia, is scheduled to begin by the middle of this year, the utility announced, and will create about 10 000 construction jobs. The project, which will involve the construction of an earthfill dam with a height of 60 m above the riverbed, and a length of 1050 m, is expected to take nine years to build, at a revised total cost of CS 8.335 billion. The dam will create a reservoir 83 km long with a surface area of 9330 ha.
