The 412 MW Rampur hydro station on the river Satluj in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh began full commercial service in early December, following the commissioning of the sixth and final unit, its owner-operator Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) announced on 4 December. The run-of-river facility, which is equipped with six vertical axis Francis turbines, with unit capacity of 68.67 MW, is expected to generate 1770 GWh/year, 30 per cent of which will be supplied to Himachal Pradesh, with the balance to be supplied to the other northern grid states of Haryana, J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh and Delhi. The powerplant began generating power in March 2014, with the synchronization of the first unit with the northern grid (see H&D Issue Three 2014).
