The Crown Estate, UK, has agreed to lease 13 ha of land in North Wales to Snowdonia Pumped Hydro (SPH), the developer of the £160 million, 100 MW Glyn Rhonwy pumped-storage project on the slopes of Cefn-Du near Llanberis. The plant will be Britain's first grid-scale electricity storage facility for more than 30 years, when commissioned as scheduled by 2019. The lease agreement, signed in April, will contribute to a secure and sustainable energy supply for Britain, according to Quarry Battery Company, SPH's parent company. "By continuing to utilise unconventional sites such as the abandoned quarry on The Crown Estate's land, Britain can realise an additional 15 GW of grid-scale storage using pumped hydro tech- nology alone.
