The Regional Development Council of The Philippines region of Northern Mindanao (RDC-X) has endorsed the dredging of the reservoir serving the Pulangi IV plant, at a budgeted cost of Peso 267 million (about US$ 5.95 million). At a meeting on 23 March, the RDC-X approved the request for the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) to provide funding for the Pulangi Rehabilitation Project Phase 2. The project aims to improve the dependable capacity of the reservoir and extend its life, by periodi- cally flushing sediment through the bottom sluice gates, restoring the maximum stream flows of the river and preventing the recurrence of a massive sediment accumulation in critical sections of the reservoir. Dr Modesto Babaylan, co-chairman of the RDC Infrastructure Development Committee, said heavy sedimentation had reduced the dependable capacity of the Pulangi Ⅳ powerplant to only 160 MW from its full capacity of 240 MW. He said the high sedimentation rate had significantly reduced the present impounding capacity of the Pulangi Ⅳ reservoir to only 32 per cent of its full capacity.
