The complete overhaul of the 8 m-diameter high voltage generator at the Roosevelt dam hydro plant in Arizona, USA, was recently completed by Sulzer. The plant, which began operating 100 years ago, was originally equipped with eight 25 Hz units supplied by Westinghouse; these were replaced in 1974 with a single 36 MW, 60 Hz unit. After the unit had been dismantled, the core was tested using the ELCID (electromagnetic core imperfection detection) method. The stator frame was found to be distorted, requiring specialized machining equipment. A new core and coils were provided. The process of installing new laminations involved the construction of a ring of plates around the stator frame, to allow for single stage hydraulic cylinders to be used to pressurize each set of laminations, and remove any air pockets.
