Peru inaugurated the Runatullo Ⅱ and Runatullo Ⅲ projects on 29 May. The schemes will strengthen the energy security of the country, and benefit 85 000 families in the Mantaro Valley. The President, Ollanta Humala Tasso, officially opened the two 20 MW hydroelectric projects. Contracts for these plants were awarded the third international auction for the supply of electricity to the national grid with renewable energy resources. The Runatullo Ⅱ plant uses a flow rate of 7 m~3/s on the Runatullo river, with a gross head of 318.5 m, to generate 19.1 MW. The water is conveyed through a 606 m tunnel, followed by a 1520 m channel, then a 1918 m tunnel, and finally a penstock 566 m long.
