Small Hydro Development Company Limited (SHDCL), a wholly owned Ghanaian independent power producer, has signed an agreement with the state utility Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to develop three hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 42 MW with an estimated investment of US$ 164 million. SHDCL plans to start construction of the Maham, Tarkwa-Breman and Nsuaem run-of-river projects on the river Ankobra in western Ghana, in early 2017, according to company director Kwadwo Poku. "The construction is set to start in the first quarter of 2017 after the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been completed. The inundated areas will not affect any communities along the river, so there will be no resettlement needed for the project," he added. Poku said the company had identified the three sites during pre-feasibility studies, had already been issued with a provisional IPP licence for the project by the Energy Commission and had initiated approval processes with the Water Resource Commission.
