Dong Energy has awarded Ramboll a contract for the design of a reactive compensation substation for the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm development. The work comprises the conceptual development, detailed design and technical assistance during tendering, fabrication and installation of the device. The requirement for offshore reactive compensation substations is a direct consequence of wind farms moving further offshore. The Hornsea project will be about 120 km off the UK's Yorkshire coast, and 180 km from its connection point on land. The 1.2 GW array is expected to comprise 150 to 240 turbines, and three HVAC substations. To reduce the power loss in the cables, the reactive compensation substation needs to be midway between the wind farm and onshore connection point.
