A pioneering community hydropower project on the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland, began producing power for the national grid on 2 June. The 400 kW Garmony hydro project on the Allt Achadh Na Moine watercourse in the Garmony Forest was developed by Green Energy Mull (GEM), an industrial and provident society operating as a community benefit company, formed by Sustainable Mull & Iona, and the Mull & Iona Community Trust. All net profits from electricity sales and feed-in tariffs, which are estimated at up to £2.4 million over the first 20 years of the life of the project, are to be invested entirely within the communities of Mull and Iona.
