Opportunities for cost benefits are enhanced by the combination of resource sharing between the primarily thermal power region of South Africa and other countries in the region that have major hydro potential, which is often in excess of domestic needs. This means that any potential major new hydro option must be evaluated in a regional context. This was the case for a recent EUropean Investment Bank funded Strategic Regional and Social Assessment (SRESA) of power development and transmission options for Mozambique [SNC Lavalin, 2012].
