The US Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory has opened a 5 MW dynamometer test facility at its National Wind Technology Centre (NWTC). It will extend the capability of NWTC engineers and their industry partners to verify the performance and reliability of wind turbine drive-train prototypes and commercial machines. The 5 MW capacity is large enough to test any land-based turbine, and the system uses innovative variable loading capabilities, which will allow researchers to simulate conditions a turbine might experience in the field.
