RWE Innogy has announced that it has stopped development of the Atlantic Array wind farm project in the Bristol Channel, citing 'prohibitive' costs and 'technical challenges', such as the hostile seabed. The company says it will focus on other, less technically challenging, offshore projects, including the forthcoming 576 MW Gwynt-Y-Mor development. This will become the second largest operating offshore wind farm in the world. It said that in comparison with other opportunities in the UK off- shore wind sector, and in light of the significant technical challenges specific to the zone, identified from intensive research, it was not feasible for RWE to continue with development in the Bristol Channel Zone. It added that as the offshore wind industry developed, and more feasible technologies became available, expected innovation and cost reduction could open up opportunities in challenging areas, such as the Bristol Channel.
