E.ON Espana is to proceed with plans to increase capacity nearly fourfold at the Aguayo pumped-storage plant in northern Spain, which will be the country's largest single capacity addition since 2007. The company confirmed in June that it expects to receive clearance from Spain's Ministry of Environment in a few months to uprate capacity at the site in San Miguel de Aguayo, Cantabria, from 360 MW to about 1306 MW and its annual output to around 2 TWh. Development of the estimated €600 million project is not expected to go ahead quickly, as the permitting process could take up to four years, and construction could take between four to five years. E.ON Espana is planning to construct a new underground powerhouse with four 250 MW turbines and connect it to the existing reservoirs of Aguayo Ⅰ. Aguayo Ⅰ was built in 1982 and upgraded by E.ON Espana in 2009.
