APG, the asset management arm of the Dutch public sector pension fund, and Germany's alternative investment manager Aquila Capital, have formed a partnership to invest €500 million (US$ 682 million) in the acquisition and development of European hydropower capacity over the next five years. APG announced in mid-July that it had commissioned Aquila Capital of Hamburg, Germany, to establish an investment vehicle dedicated to hydropower infrastructure. APG will commit €250 million to the venture, which Aquila will double with debt financing and use this to buy stakes in hydropower plants in Europe, including the Nordic countries. Aquila Capital will provide the operational management of the assets, as well as portfolio management services to the partnership. The fund plans to buy between five and 10 projects over the coming five years, with an average project size of €75 million, and expects to earn a high yield from the investments, which are likely to be focused first on Scandinavia and later on Turkey.
