The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) plans to redevelop the Lago Loiza storage hydroelectric scheme in the northern municipality of Trujillo Alto, a suburb of the capital San Juan. Bidding for equipment took place in August. The Carraizo concrete gravity dam, with a length of 210 m, and a height of 44 m to the crest of the non-overflow section, along with a powerhouse equipped with three units with a total capacity of 3 MW, was first commissioned in March 1953, about 22 km upstream from the mouth of the Rio Grande de Loiza, to provide water and electricity to the San Juan metropolitan area.
