Hochtief of Germany has been awarded a contract worth € 132 million (US$ 179 million) to construct a pressure tunnel for the 88 MW Gemeinschaftskraftwerk Inn hydro plant on the River Inn in Austria's southwestern province of Tirol. The 22.6 km-long Triebwasserweg Maria Stein tunnel, with a 6.5 m diameter, is scheduled to be completed in mid-2018. The tunnel will run from the reservoir in Ovella to the powerhouse at Prutz, feeding two 44 MW Francis turbines and generators. Hochtief will construct the pressure tunnel, which will be lined with reinforced concrete using two hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machines. The CHF 580 million (US$ 619 million) project is being developed by Gemeinschaftskraftwerk Inn GmbH, which is a joint venture of Verbund (50 per cent), Tiroler Wasserkraft or TIWAG (36 per cent) and Engadiner Kraftwerke (14 per cent). The plant will produce between 400 and 450 GWh/year.
