The second and final stage of a project to install two 75 MW floating wind turbines off the coast of Japan has begun, with completion expected by March 2015. The first stage of the project, consisting of one 2 MW floating wind turbine, and the world's first 25 MVA floating substation and undersea cable, was completed last year. The turbine started generating electricity in November last year, transmitting the energy to Tohoku Electric Power Co in Fukushima Prefecture. The construction of the three-column semi-submersible platform, as part of the second phase, has been successfully completed. The consortium plans to install two more 7 MW turbines by March 2015. It will eventually have a generation capacity of 1 GW from 143 turbines.
