The Swiss hydropower producer Kraftwerke Oberhasli (KWO) announced in mid-August that it had been granted a concession by the Canton of Bern, and the regional authorities, for its CHF 155 million (US$ 165.5 million) Grimsel 1E project, involving the construction of a new 150 MW power station between the Grimsel and Raterichs-boden lakes. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2015 and is expected to take four years. The new sta- tion is planned to provide an additional 30 GWh/year, but more importantly will offer KWO more flexibility in the use of its water resources. The new powerplant will eliminate a bottle-neck in the KWO system, as at present only one small powerplant (Grimsel 1) exists between the lakes. KWO opted to develop the Grimsel 1E project after deciding to postpone development of the 3600 MW Grimsel pumped-storage project, for which it had secured a concession contract, owing to unfavourable market conditions.
