A ceremony was held in August in the Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir, at which India's Prime Minister, the Hon. Narendra Modi, officially inaugurated the 44 MW Chutak hydro plant, and dedicated it to the nation. Chutak is a run-of-river scheme on the Suru river, equipped with four generating units, which are designed to produce 216 GWh/year. The power-plant operates with a 52 m head, with water being conveyed through a 4.8 km-long headrace channel. The power from the project, which was completed in 2013, is being transmitted to the Kargil district.
