The Peruvian utility Edegel, a subsidiary of Spain's Endesa, plans to invest US$ 480 million in the 192 MW Curibamba hydroelectric project, which is to be built in the central region of Junin. The cost is nearly double the investment first estimated in a 2010 environmental impact assessment. The announcement follows the award of a definitive concession to Edegel for construction of the plant by the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The plant, to harness the waters of the Comas and Uchubamba rivers, in Apata, Molinos and Monobamba districts, is expected to take 50 months to be developed.
