摘要

A community-based landfill gas project in Brazil piloted in 2009 by the Appalachian Energy Center, USA, at the Appalachian State University, has now been implemented will funded in part by $750 000 from the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment. Work to capture methane gas produced from the decomposition of materials at the Maracanau Landfill began in 2009 when the Energy Center received a $120 000 Green Methane Initiative (GMI) grant to investigate the potential for community-based landfill gas utilization projects in Ceara, Brazil. Seven landfills were investigated by the team, and the medium-sized landfill at Mara-canau emerged as the most likely prospect, largely because of strong local support. Maracanau is an industrial city with approximately 4 million residents in the poverty-stricken region of northeast Brazil.
