The Government of Uganda, represented by KfW, the German Development Bank, has launched the third Request for Proposals (RfP) under the country's pilot Global Energy Transfer Feed-in Tariffs (GET FiT) Programme. Bids are invited by 23 January 2015 for small hydro, bio-mass and bagasse projects in Uganda, with an advanced preparation status (including minimum full feasibility study and an environmental and social impact assessment). The GET FiT concept was developed by Deutsche Bank and KfW in 2011/12 to support private sector investment in renewable energy in emerging and developing countries by topping up th6 base FiT to bridge the gap with the levelized cost of electricity. It was launched in Uganda in May 2013, with the aim of fast-tracking the development of about 20 on-grid small-scale projects, with a total installed capacity of around 170 MW by 2017. To date, a total of 13 renewable energy projects, with a combined installed capacity of 108.5 MW, have been approved by GET FiT, following two tenders in 2013/2014, including 10 run-of-river hydro projects with a total capacity of 80.6 MW and expected annual output of 395 GWh.
