Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has awarded a contract to a Chinese-led consortium to build the 371 MW Geba storage hydropower scheme on the Geba river, in southwestern Ethiopia. Engineering, procurement and construction work will be carried out by the China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), SinoHydro, and the local company Sur Construction. Water, Irrigation and Energy Minister, Alemayehu Tegenu, said 80 per cent of Geba's US$ 583 million cost would be financed by the Export-Import Bank of China. EEP's predecessor, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation, originally sought expressions of interest in late 2008 to finance and build Geba as two projects: 220 MW Geba Ⅰ and 165 MW Geba Ⅱ. Norplan-Norconsult completed feasibility studies for the project in February 2005. CGGC, SinoHydro and Sur previously collaborated on the construction of the 300 MW Tekeze hydro plant on the Tekeze river, which was commissioned in 2009, and which has the highest double-curvature arch dam in Africa. CGGC also built the 97 MW Fincha Amerti Neshe multipurpose hydropower scheme, which began operation in 2011-12. It was the first EPC project constructed by a Chinese company in East Africa.
