The authors explain design considerations for hydro turbines that will be the largest in the world when developed for the Evenkiyskaya hydro plant in Russia. The relative merits of using temporary replaceable runners versus variable speed units are discussed, along with some of the challenges of manufacturing and transporting such large-scale machines.
