Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in Japan reached more than 10 GW cumulatively, by the summer of 2013; it broke through the 10 GW barrier during August 2013 and exceeded 10.5 GW at the end of the month. According to figures in the NPD Solarbuzz Asia Pacific PV Market Quarterly Report, Japan is only the fifth country to reach this mark, after Germany, Italy, China and the USA. The report notes that the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry launched a subsidy programme for residential PV systems in 1994. Initially, it covered 50 per cent of the cost of PV systems. The budget for 1994 was ¥2 billion (€14.8 million).
