Preparations for new pumped-storage development in the UK are progressing, with approval received for Quarry Battery Co's project in Wales, and Scottish and Southern Electric (SSE) anticipating the verdict shortly on its 600 MW Coire Glas scheme in Scotland. Quarry Battery received planning permission from Gywnedd Council to develop the 49.9 MW Glyn Rhonwy project, which it says will store 600 MWh of energy. The company specializes in seeking disused quarries for pumped-storage development, and Glyn Rhonwy is its first major scheme. It plans to have the UK£ 100 million (approximately US$164 million) project completed in 2017.
